Analytical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Science Lab

Analytical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Science Lab

This is Pharmaceutical Analysis lab which is well equipped with supplicated and modern instruments that are being used on daily basis in Pharmaceutical and Biotechnological companies, Environmental agencies and related sectors. In this lab, you can see Disintegration & Dissolution apparatus, IR spectroscopy, HPLC & UPLC and GCMS. Both Pharmaceutical Science and Chemistry students do their lab experiments in this lab.

Disintegration & Dissolution Apparatus

After taking a tablet like paracetamol, you might wonder how long it does take to start its action. So, disintegration apparatus is used to determine the time required to disintegrate (break down) a tablet into particles whilst dissolution apparatus is used to determine the time required by such particles to go into solution just before its absorption from gut. Pharmaceutical Science students in their 2nd year do their lab experiments using these instruments.

HPLC & UPLC

High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) are used for the analysis (both qualitative and quantitative) of drugs. UPLC is more efficient which requires only 1-3 min to run a sample. Both Pharmaceutical Science and Chemistry students in their 3rd year do their lab experiments using these instruments.

GMCS

Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) is another equipment to analyse volatile and thermostable (stable at high temperature) drugs. Both Pharmaceutical Science and Chemistry students in their 3rd year do their lab experiments using this instrument.

Baby Lab

Baby Lab

Our Baby Development Lab is led by Dr Sam Wass and works closely with local communities to understand how noisy environments impact early development. It includes facilities for dual EEG (i.e. to record live brain activity at the same time from children and adults), fNIRS, screen-based and mobile eye-tracking systems. We also have miniaturised wearable microphones, cameras and biophysical recording equipment to allow us to record outside the lab, in ‘real-world’ settings.
